Zepbound: NYT Reports Alopecia Cure, Cannabis Weaning; Reddit Users Note Side Effects
Reports show GLP-1 drugs like Zepbound and Ozempic, used by 60,000 in Ireland and one in eight US adults, have unexpected effects beyond weight loss. A New York Times survey of 2,000 American adults found benefits like improved body image, but also side effects, as highlighted by a Nature Health AI analysis of 400,000 Reddit posts. While transformative, these drugs costing upwards of €200 monthly are not a cure-all.
A woman told the New York Times that Zepbound cured her alopecia, while a man reported it weaned him off cannabis for obesity-related sleep apnoea. Reddit forums feature posts about rapid weight loss and the silencing of "food noise," but also unexpected effects. One user lost interest in wine, while another managed only one beer when previously they would have had many.
Other users report GLP-1s cured acid reflux, joint pain, migraines, Diet Coke addiction, bloating, high blood pressure, or menopause symptoms. GLP-1s, used for 20 years to treat diabetes, gained prominence five years ago with the promise to "solve obesity." In Ireland, available brands are Wegovy, Saxenda, Ozempic, and Mounjaro, with Ozempic prescribed only for diabetes. About 60,000 people are taking them at a cost upwards of €200 a month. A pill form of semaglutide awaits European approval. In the US, one in eight adults reportedly takes them. Nature Health published a paper using AI to scan 400,000 Reddit posts by 70,000 GLP users to identify side effects missed by clinical trials.
A New York Times survey of 2,000 American adults taking GLP-1s found that 64% reported improved body image, 59% improved productivity, 45% improved memory, and nearly half noted better relationships and social lives. Some attribute this to increased self-confidence from weight loss. However, concerns exist, including gastrointestinal symptoms, muscle loss, and warnings from the World Health Organisation about acute pancreatitis. University of Pennsylvania researchers found 4% of Reddit users had unexplained menstrual issues. Some users report a "meh" effect, describing a loss of desire for activities and social interaction.
Taking these drugs is currently a long-term commitment. GLP-1s may transform public health, but health economics put them out of reach for many. While transformative, we should remember what they are not: a cure for the human condition.
