Dublin Rose Suad Mooge «Shocked but Not Surprised» by Online Hate
Dublin Rose Suad Mooge is «shocked but not surprised» by online comments questioning her Irish identity after her win. Born in Sligo, she views the negativity as part of growing up as a person of color in Ireland. Mooge remains confident in her identity and committed to representing diverse communities.
Suad Mooge, the newly crowned Dublin Rose, expressed being «shocked but not surprised» by social media comments questioning her Irish identity. Mooge, who will represent Dublin at the Rose of Tralee in Co Kerry in August, stated that such comments are «part of the experience of growing up» as a person of color in Ireland.
Speaking to RTÉ's Liveline, Mooge noted the prevalence of remarks about her skin tone, religion, and perceived lack of Irish heritage, despite being born in Sligo. While accustomed to such negativity, she was surprised by the «volume of hate» that intensified after her win. Mooge affirmed her commitment to participating in such events, viewing it as an opportunity to drive change and represent diverse communities, encouraging other girls to pursue similar opportunities.
Mooge clarified that those posting negative comments often haven't read her bio, which confirms her Sligo birth. She believes this «very small group of people, who are just very loud» does not represent the majority opinion in Ireland, emphasizing the significant positive feedback received. She remains confident in her Irish identity.
