Europe Must Integrate Ukraine for Its Own Security and Strength, Says Estonian Foreign Minister
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna asserts that integrating Ukraine is vital for Europe's security and strength. He argues Ukraine's powerful military is a strategic asset, not a burden. Full integration into EU and NATO is crucial to avoid instability and counter Russian imperialism, making Europe a stronger geopolitical power.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna argues that supporting Ukraine is a strategic investment in Europe's security, resilience, and future, not a burden. He emphasizes that Ukraine possesses one of Europe’s most powerful and battle-tested militaries, capable of striking deep inside Russia, a reality underscored by Russia's weak Victory Day parade this year.
Tsahkna presents two paths for Europe: fully integrating Ukraine into its political, economic, and security structures, or leaving it in a «grey zone.» He warns that a «grey zone» would lead to instability, prevent Europe from leveraging Ukraine's military and industrial assets, and signal that force, not rules, determines outcomes. Integration, conversely, would make Europe safer, stronger, and a more capable geopolitical power.
He highlights Ukraine's military experience in drones, electronic warfare, and cyber resilience as valuable assets for Europe's defense ecosystem. Tsahkna stresses the need for continued pressure on Russia, sustained support for Ukraine, and a clear path toward EU and NATO integration, viewing enlargement as a strategic necessity, not a bureaucratic process. A free, democratic, and integrated Ukraine is seen as the strongest long-term guarantee of security for both Europe and Ukraine, and an antidote to Russian imperialism.
