A fire that broke out at a commercial premises in the old Jute Factory on Tycor Avenue, Waterford city, at approximately 6:30 PM on Saturday, severely damaged around 40 businesses. The blaze was brought under control yesterday after Waterford City Fire Service crews battled for many hours to contain its vast spread. The Fire Service thanked the public for staying away and heeding safety advice, including closing doors and windows due to smoke.

Waterford City and County Council's management is proceeding on the basis that asbestos is present in the building's cement roof, though not confirmed. Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, John Cummins, announced that the government is assessing support for impacted businesses and groups. He spoke with Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Peter Burke, who will visit Waterford City to engage with businesses. A humanitarian scheme is being considered by several departments.

Andrew Hepburn, owner of DG Foods, which operated from Tycor Avenue for two decades, stated his business is «all ash» and «complete dust,» with all stock destroyed. While his food business has a second location, he highlighted the massive knock-on effect on the local economy and hopes for government financial assistance.
