Ireland's Energy Crisis: Offshore Wind and Grid Upgrades Crucial for Future

Ireland's energy crisis stems from fossil fuel reliance. The solution is accelerating home-grown clean electricity, especially offshore wind, and urgently upgrading the national grid. This investment will reduce costs, enhance energy security, and position Ireland as a European leader.

Ireland faces recurring energy crises due to its reliance on foreign fossil fuels. The solution lies in transitioning to a power system based on home-grown, clean electricity, primarily wind power.

Wind power already generates over 40 percent of Ireland's electricity, rising to nearly 50 percent with other renewables like solar. However, significant untapped offshore wind potential exists, with initial projects in planning for the Irish Sea. Delays in developing major offshore wind farms are costly; the UK, with Europe's largest offshore wind sector, has significantly lower energy bills. Spain, with over 10 times Ireland's installed renewable capacity (104GW), has seen wholesale prices up to 70 percent lower than Ireland's at times.

While renewables are variable, a system-wide approach including flexible generation and battery storage is understood. A critical issue is Ireland's electricity grid, which currently forfeits nearly a fifth of available wind power due to capacity limitations. Upgrading and expanding the grid, exemplified by the 20-year delay on the North-South Interconnector, is essential for integrating renewables and ensuring energy security. This investment will reduce costs and provide long-term certainty, positioning Ireland as a European leader in clean energy, especially as it prepares for the EU Council presidency from July. The government shows intent with approved grid investment programs, an infrastructure action plan, and an offshore wind clearing house.
