Departments Face 0.1%-1.4% Spending Cuts Due to Education Overspend, Minister Confirms

Government departments face 0.1%-1.4% spending cuts this year, confirmed Minister Jack Chambers. This is due to a €600-700 million overspend in the Department of Education and a €250 million HSE overspend. Chambers is also implementing a new framework to enhance fiscal discipline.

Government departments may reduce expected spending this year by 0.1% to 1.4% due to increased financial demands on the Department of Education. Minister for Public Expenditure, Jack Chambers, confirmed this move, stating he has written to all departments about reversing or canceling some spending earmarked for next year.

The overspend in the Department of Education is estimated at €600-700 million, largely linked to special education. This, combined with the HSE’s €250 million overspend, necessitates other departments being «levied» to stay within 2026 limits and secure next year's funding. Chambers defended the plan, noting that while the Department of Social Protection may face a 0.1% levy, other departments could see cuts up to 1.4%. He aims to protect the Departments of Health and Social Protection.

Chambers also announced a new escalation framework to enhance fiscal discipline and controls, addressing emerging risks that could jeopardize sanctioned spending. This framework could lead to the withdrawal or sanction of additional expenditure expansion, affecting various departments.
