Irish Survey Reveals 75% of Adults Lack Confidence in Identifying AI Scams

A Trendlife survey reveals 75% of Irish adults are not confident in identifying AI-generated scams or deepfakes, raising significant concern. Many also lack knowledge on how to respond to such fraud. The findings underscore a critical need for public education as AI integrates into daily life.

A recent survey indicates that Irish consumers may not be adequately prepared for the increasing prevalence of AI-generated scams. The study, conducted by Trendlife, reveals that three-quarters of Irish adults lack confidence in their ability to identify AI-generated scams or deepfakes, a finding that raises significant concern.

Even individuals who express confidence in their ability to detect such fraud face considerable risk, as AI scams are becoming progressively more sophisticated and convincing. This advancement means that even the most vigilant individuals could potentially fall victim. Furthermore, many respondents admitted uncertainty regarding the appropriate steps to take if targeted by a scam, with only three in ten Irish adults reporting knowledge of how to respond to identity theft. Frequently, more technologically proficient family members provide assistance; half of 18-24 year olds have aided a parent or relative in recovering from a scam.

More broadly, over one-third of respondents, specifically 35.5 percent, expressed worry about the progression of AI, while only 10 percent reported excitement. There is also a notable lack of confidence in legal protections, with more than 69 percent of respondents stating that current legislation is insufficient to safeguard families against the misuse of AI technology.

Regional variations in opinion were significant. Concerns about identifying scams were particularly high in Limerick, where 69 percent of residents reported an inability to spot AI fraud. In Kildare, 86 percent of individuals expressed greater mistrust in the legal system's protective capabilities. Galway exhibited the most optimism regarding AI, with concerns notably below the national average, whereas Cork residents displayed the highest levels of anxiety. As AI rapidly integrates into daily life, many individuals appear to be navigating this new reality without the necessary tools for safe engagement, highlighting the critical need for public education and guidance.
