Taoiseach Backs TD's Nuclear Energy Proposal Amid Dáil Tensions

The Dáil is experiencing heightened tensions over household aid and student fees. Amid this, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar endorsed TD James O’Connor's proposal to explore nuclear energy, a divisive issue. Separately, Culture Minister Patrick O’Donovan advocated for the repatriation of colonial heritage objects.

The Dáil faces ongoing tensions, with opposition demanding more household aid for rising costs and a decision on excise fuel cuts due by July's end. A significant cost-of-living package is anticipated in October's budget. Internal coalition friction arose over student fees, publicly resolved by Higher Education Minister James Lawless, who stated all funding options remain open.

Amid these disputes, an unexpected unity emerged within Fianna Fáil regarding nuclear energy. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar approved Cork East TD James O’Connor's proposal to examine lifting restrictions on nuclear energy generation. O’Connor argues nuclear power provides energy security and lower costs, citing other EU states. Labour leader Ivana Bacik called the proposal «harebrained», and former Green Party TD Brian Leddin deemed it a distraction, questioning the feasibility within a 15-20 year timeframe and O’Connor's willingness to host a facility in his constituency. O’Connor responded that site selection should be based on engineering merits, not nimbyism.

Separately, Culture Minister Patrick O’Donovan and Sinn Féin’s Aengus Ó Snodaigh agreed on repatriating heritage objects taken during colonial plunder, stating such items do not belong in former colonial powerhouses. In a moment of cross-border unity, British Ambassador Kara Owen attended the launch of the British and Irish Society of Animal Science at Leinster House, promoting research in climate action, sustainable food, and rural prosperity.
