EU States Request €43 Billion Compensation for Weapons to Ukraine, Despite Hungarian Blockade
EU states have requested €43 billion in compensation for weapons supplied to Ukraine. These funds are to be reimbursed via the European Peace Facility, which Hungary is blocking. EU officials are exploring alternative reimbursement methods.
European Union member states have submitted requests to the European Commission for reimbursement of armaments provided to Ukraine, totaling 43 billion euros. These funds are intended to be partially compensated through the European Peace Facility, which is currently blocked by Hungary.
According to a correspondent from «European Pravda», citing two unnamed EU officials, the total sum of requests from EU states for weapons, ammunition, and equipment transferred to Ukraine indeed amounts to 43 billion euros. This sum has increased as member states continued to provide support to Ukraine and transfer items from their stockpiles and arsenals, despite Hungary blocking 6.6 billion euros from the European Peace Facility, which were designated for compensation.
It is important to note that expenses for aid to Ukraine are not reimbursed at 100%, but at a specific rate. Even if the 6.6 billion euros are unblocked, this amount will be insufficient for full compensation if the current rate is maintained. Therefore, EU officials are currently considering alternative ways to ensure appropriate reimbursement to member states.
The European Peace Facility has been used since 2022 to compensate member states for military assistance provided to Ukraine. However, Hungary has been blocking the allocation of funds from this facility for several years. Furthermore, the EU is replenishing the European Peace Facility with revenues from frozen Russian assets, which led to the government of current Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán filing a lawsuit against the European Peace Facility and the Council of the EU in the EU Court.
