Ukraine Offers Airspace Security Teams to Latvia After May 7 Drone Incidents

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed Kyiv is in contact with Latvia after unidentified drones entered its airspace on May 7. Ukraine is considering sending expert teams to partner countries to bolster airspace security. This initiative follows similar incidents, including one in Finland, where Russian electronic warfare systems are suspected of redirecting drones.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced Kyiv is in close contact with Latvia following multiple unidentified drone incursions into Latvian airspace overnight on May 7. Two drones reportedly crashed on Latvian territory, one near a fuel storage facility, with initial reports suggesting they originated from Russian territory.

Under President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s instructions, Ukraine is considering sending expert teams to partner countries to enhance airspace security and assist in responding to drone incidents or electronic interference. Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine never directed drones toward NATO member Latvia and has apologized to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland for earlier unintended drone incidents caused by Russian electronic warfare systems.

This follows a similar incident earlier this year in Finland, where Ukrainian officials stated drones were not deliberately sent but likely redirected by Russian electronic warfare. Finnish authorities reported drone crashes near their southeastern border, with at least one carrying Ukrainian markings, prompting a controlled detonation and raising regional concerns. Ukraine continues close coordination with Baltic and Nordic partners to ensure transparency and prevent further cross-border risks.
