MTU Students on High Alert After Global Cybersecurity Incident Impacts Canvas LMS

Munster Technological University (MTU) students are on high alert after a global cybersecurity incident affecting Instructure's Canvas LMS. Personal information of 18,000 students may be compromised, prompting MTU to advise vigilance against suspicious communications. The university is working with Instructure to assess the impact.

Munster Technological University (MTU) has issued a heightened alert to its students following a global cybersecurity incident that may have compromised personal information. The incident affects Canvas, the Learning Management System (LMS) provided by US-based education technology company Instructure, which is utilized by MTU.

Instructure informed MTU earlier this week that it was among the institutions impacted by the breach, which has affected universities and students worldwide. MTU is actively collaborating with Instructure to determine the precise nature and extent of any potential impact on its university community. The institution is directly communicating with both students and staff, advising them to exercise vigilance, particularly regarding suspicious emails, links, or attachments.

An email was dispatched to MTU's 18,000 full-time and part-time students across its six campuses in Cork and Kerry. The communication stated that the compromised data "is described as appearing to include personal information." While the Canvas system remains secure for use, students were cautioned to be on "heightened alert to possible scam emails and be vigilant when opening links or attachments." Further details about the incident are expected to be provided to students.
