Cocaine Drives 60% of Drug Intimidation Cases in Ireland, Gardaí Report

A new report shows cocaine use is the main cause of drug-related intimidation (DRI) in Ireland, making up nearly 60% of cases. Gardaí have noted a rise in incidents over five years, with victims experiencing threats and exploitation. The report, the first of its kind, highlights Dublin as a hotspot and drug debts as a key factor.

A new report reveals cocaine use is the primary driver behind drug-related intimidation (DRI) in the Republic of Ireland, accounting for nearly 60% of all cases. Gardaí note a significant increase in such incidents over the past five years, with victims facing threats, forced drug storage, and sexual exploitation.

The National Drug Related Intimidation & Violence Engagement Project compiled the report, which found 43% of cases occurred in Dublin. While victims varied in age, 59% were male. Those perpetrating the intimidation were predominantly male and under 30, with a small proportion under 18, indicating youth exploitation.

Victims reported threats to personal and family safety, property damage, and coercive demands like holding contraband. Some also alleged sexual exploitation, blackmail, and forced criminal involvement. Cocaine was implicated in 58.8% of cases, followed by cannabis at 14.4%, with most incidents stemming from drug debts.

Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis stated Gardaí handled approximately 600 DRI incidents in 2025 and have seen an increase in arrests and charges. Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan highlighted the fear and isolation experienced by victims.
