Irish Ferry Operators Monitor Iran War Impact, Some Implement Surcharges for Summer
Irish ferry operators are bracing for the summer season amid Iran war oil restrictions, with some implementing surcharges. Brittany Ferries, having hedged fuel costs, promises no surcharges, while Hibernia Line launched a new route. Fares are expected to be dynamic, with some operators already adding fees due to rising oil prices.
Irish ferry operators are closely monitoring the impact of the war in Iran and resulting oil restrictions as they prepare for the critical summer season. While reassuring customers that cancellations seen in aviation are unlikely, some high-profile operators are not ruling out rising fares, with one firm already implementing additional charges due to the Strait of Hormuz closure.
Brittany Ferries, less vulnerable to oil price shocks due to advance purchases for 2026, challenged competitors to avoid price increases. CEO Christophe Mathieu confirmed they would not add surcharges this summer, having hedged most fuel costs at $70 a barrel, significantly below current prices of $110.75-$114. This strategy mirrors Ryanair's approach to insulate against price shocks.
Travel journalist Eoghan Corry noted ferries face more vulnerabilities than airlines, partly due to weather-related delays. He highlighted higher peak season prices, with a Dublin-Cherbourg round trip for a family of four with a car costing €860 in mid-August. This compares favorably to Aer Lingus flights to Rennes (€1,200+) or Nice (€950-€1,300) for two adults and two children.
Hibernia Line launched a new route from Ringaskiddy, Cork, to Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. CEO Aidan Coffey stated fuel suppliers assured steady, though pricey, stocks. Irish Ferries, with up to 38 daily sailings, is also watching fuel price implications from the US-Iran conflict, noting their shorter routes offer resilience but not ruling out dynamic fare increases. P&O Ferries recently added surcharges: £7.50 (€8.69) for vehicles and £2 (€2.32) for foot passengers, effective March 9, following the US-Israel attack on Iran.
