EU Prepares to End Protection for Ukrainians by March 2027, Encouraging Voluntary Return

The European Union has begun preparing for the gradual termination of the temporary protection regime for Ukrainian citizens, which is valid until March 2027. The authorities of the EU member states consider the voluntary return of Ukrainians to their homeland as one of the key instruments at this stage.
The European Commission emphasizes that Ukrainian citizens have the right to voluntarily return home without losing their temporary protection status when making short-term trips. Moreover, they will retain the opportunity to re-avail themselves of protection in the EU if necessary.
A number of European Union countries are already developing long-term plans that provide for preparing for the return of Ukrainians. These plans include assisting with the processing of documents, organizing transportation, and integration after returning to Ukraine.
At the same time, the European Union emphasizes that the return must be exclusively voluntary and safe. Final decisions on this issue will be made taking into account the current situation in Ukraine.
