Irish Health Department Prepares for Two Nationals from Hantavirus-Hit MV Hondius
Ireland's Department of Health is planning care for two nationals returning from the hantavirus-affected MV Hondius cruise ship. They will quarantine and be monitored, with protocols in place for their return. The NHPO is coordinating the public health response to ensure safety and care.
The Department of Health is developing plans for the care of two Irish nationals returning from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which experienced a hantavirus outbreak. Their care will depend on their medical status.
At a minimum, both individuals are expected to quarantine and be actively monitored, following European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control guidance. Quarantine locations will be decided case-by-case, and symptomatic individuals will be assessed and treated. Public health protocols, including certification and passenger health assessments, will be followed upon the ship's docking.
The National Incidence Management Team of the National Health Protection Office (NHPO) has been activated to coordinate the public health response, ensuring optimal patient care and safety while protecting broader public health. The Department of Health is monitoring the situation with EU colleagues and collaborating with the HSE and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which is providing consular assistance.
