Poll: Majority in Ireland and Northern Ireland Support EU Unity, UK Rejoining EU
A poll shows a majority in Ireland (59%) and Northern Ireland (63%) would back Irish unity within the EU. Additionally, 73% in Northern Ireland support the UK rejoining the EU. While pro-European sentiment is strong, satisfaction with the EU's direction has declined, with migration and cost of living being key concerns.
A recent poll reveals that a majority on the island of Ireland would vote for Irish unity within the EU. Specifically, 59% in Ireland and 63% in Northern Ireland would support a united Ireland in the EU if a referendum were held. The poll also indicates that 73% in Northern Ireland would vote for the UK to rejoin the EU.
The European Movement Ireland’s Island of Ireland EU Poll 2026, conducted by Amarach Research, surveyed 1,200 adults in both jurisdictions between March 26 and 31, 2026, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2%. Support for Ireland remaining an EU member is high at 82% in Ireland and 76% in Northern Ireland.
Both north and south, over 70% believe the EU should become more independent from the US (71% in Ireland, 79% in Northern Ireland). Satisfaction with the EU's direction has declined from 58% in 2023 to 45% in 2026 in Ireland, with migration and cost of living being top concerns. In Northern Ireland, 46% are satisfied, and 36% dissatisfied, citing economic issues and federalism as concerns. Trade is seen as the EU's strongest area, while migration is its weakest.
David Geary, CEO of European Movement Ireland, noted a "strongly pro-European" sentiment but also "areas of disconnect emerging," particularly regarding the EU's direction. He emphasized the opportunity for a national conversation on Ireland's place in the EU during its upcoming six-month EU Council presidency term in July.
