US State Department Approves $373.6 Million Sale of JDAM-ER Munitions to Ukraine
The U.S. State Department approved a $373.6 million sale of JDAM-ER munitions and equipment to Ukraine. This will bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities by providing guided munitions with a range exceeding 70 km. Boeing will serve as the primary contractor.
The U.S. Department of State has approved the potential sale of Joint Direct Attack Munitions – Extended Range (JDAM-ER) and related equipment to Ukraine. The total value of the deal is estimated at $373.6 million.
The Ukrainian government requested to purchase 1,200 KMU-572 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) tail kits and 332 KMU-556 JDAM tail kits. The order also includes JDAM maintenance equipment, spare and repair parts, consumables, repair and maintenance support, weapon system software, as well as engineering, technical, and logistical services to be provided by the U.S. government and contractors.
The State Department noted that the proposed sale will enhance Ukraine's ability to counter current and future threats. It will provide the country with additional means to fulfill self-defense tasks and ensure regional security through a more robust air defense capability. Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) is a kit of specialized equipment that converts unguided bombs into guided munitions. The Extended Range version provides a flight range of over 70 kilometers.
Boeing, located in St. Louis, Missouri, will be the principal contractor for the order. This agreement is part of broader support: in November, the U.S. already approved the potential sale of Patriot air defense system maintenance equipment to Ukraine, valued at approximately $105 million. Meanwhile, according to media reports, Washington warned European allies last week, including the United Kingdom, Poland, Lithuania, and Estonia, of potential significant delays in American weapon deliveries due to the need to replenish its own stockpiles, depleted by the war in Iran.
