Panda Waste Imposes 97 Cent Fuel Surcharge Amid Rising Oil Prices, Recycling Value Debate
Panda Waste is introducing a 97 cent monthly fuel surcharge due to rising oil prices affecting its collection fleet. Critics highlight that increased oil prices also boost the value of recycled plastic, which the company collects. This follows a bin charge increase three months prior.
Panda Waste is implementing a fuel surcharge on its customers, citing increased operational costs for its collection fleet due to rising oil prices. This new monthly charge, amounting to 97 cent, was reported on May 1st.
However, this decision has drawn scrutiny, particularly concerning the dual impact of elevated oil prices. While higher oil costs drive up fuel expenses for Panda Waste, they simultaneously increase the value of recycled plastic, as plastic production is oil-dependent. Consequently, the material customers diligently sort and present for fortnightly collection becomes more valuable to the company.
This move comes just three months after a previous increase in bin charges. For a company owned by one of the world’s largest investment funds, the imposition of an additional surcharge, especially given the increased value of recycled materials, presents a challenging justification to its customer base.
