Tánaiste Simon Harris Victim of AI Deepfake Scam; Tech Layoffs Mount Globally

Tánaiste Simon Harris was a victim of an AI deepfake promoting fraudulent investments. This incident underscores AI’s impact on the job market, with major tech companies like Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft announcing significant layoffs globally. The Irish government is preparing for «significant upheaval» as AI is expected to displace many jobs, particularly in white-collar sectors.

Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris revealed he was a victim of AI-generated «deepfake» videos used to advertise fraudulent investment products online. Harris joked the video was so realistic he had to watch it twice to confirm it wasn’t him.

This incident highlights broader challenges AI poses, particularly in the job market. Covalen, a Dublin-based company providing services to Meta, announced 700 layoffs, adding to 300 earlier this year. This follows Meta’s global plan to cut 10,000 jobs due to AI-driven changes. Other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft have also cut thousands of jobs, with an online tracker reporting over 165,000 tech layoffs globally.

These job losses, particularly in Ireland’s high-paying multinational sector, could significantly impact public finances, as the top 10% of earners, many from multinationals, pay two-thirds of all income tax. Experts predict further job displacement, with two-thirds of Irish jobs «highly exposed» to AI. Dario Amodei, founder of Anthropic, estimates 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs could be lost within years.

The Irish Government is addressing this, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin warning of «significant upheaval.» The National Economic and Social Council released a report on the State’s approach, and Fianna Fáil TD Naoise Ó Cearúil proposed a pilot scheme for workers transitioning to AI. Malcolm Byrne’s Oireachtas Committee on AI has been active since last year, noting that while AI displaces some jobs, it will also create new ones, emphasizing that «lawyers who use AI will replace lawyers who don’t.»
