Over 46,000 households, totaling 83,644 individuals, have benefited from the Government's Help to Buy scheme since 2020. The initiative allows buyers to reclaim up to €30,000 in past tax towards a home purchase. Despite concerns about inflation, the government emphasizes its role in promoting homeownership.
New data reveals that over 46,000 households have utilized the Government's Help to Buy scheme since 2020. This initiative enables individuals to reclaim previously paid income tax, which can then be applied towards the purchase of a new home.
According to figures released by the Department of Finance, a total of 46,112 claims were approved, benefiting 83,644 people between July 2020 and April 2026. Of these approved claims, 35,642 were for property purchases, while the remaining 10,470 were for self-build projects.
While the scheme aims to assist individuals in entering the housing market, some analysts have voiced concerns that it might contribute to property price inflation. However, Tánaiste Simon Harris affirmed the government's commitment, stating, «We are determined to pull every lever to build more homes and deliver more homeownership.» He further noted, «One such support is Help-to-Buy and really positive figures given to me show the impact this support is having all across the country.»
The Help to Buy scheme permits eligible buyers to reclaim up to €30,000 of income tax paid over the preceding four years. This support is applicable to new properties valued at up to €500,000.
