Panda Waste Imposes 97 Cent Fuel Surcharge on 350,000 Customers

Panda Waste, serving over 350,000 customers in Ireland, is implementing a 97 cent plus VAT monthly fuel surcharge due to rising global oil prices. This makes it one of the first Irish companies to do so, potentially signaling broader economic trends. The charge adds about €12 annually to customer bills.

Panda Waste, a major Irish waste management company with over 350,000 customers, has introduced a 97 cent plus VAT fuel surcharge on monthly bills starting this month. This decision responds to the spike in global oil prices due to the Middle East conflict and ongoing global instability.

The surcharge, amounting to approximately €12 annually, makes Panda Waste one of the first companies in Ireland to implement such a charge. This could signal similar actions across the waste management sector and wider economy. The company stated it had absorbed rising fuel costs until now but can no longer do so without impacting service.

Conor Walsh of the Irish Waste Management Association noted that fuel and labor are the largest costs for waste companies. He also highlighted an independent assessment by economist Frank Conway, which found that domestic waste prices increased by an average of 16% from 2020 to 2026, significantly less than the 24% inflation rate over the same period.
