Gardaí Identify Main Suspects in Arson Killing of 4-Year-Old Tadhg Farrell and Mary Holt
Gardaí have identified key suspects in the December arson attack that killed 4-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his grandaunt, Mary Holt, in Co Offaly. Five people were arrested this week in connection with the feud-related incident, which was reportedly revenge for a prison fight. The investigation continues into the fatal fire and previous attacks on the family home.
Gardaí believe they have identified the main figures behind the feud-related arson attack in December that killed four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his grandaunt, 60-year-old Mary Holt, at their Co Offaly home. The attack, a petrol bombing, followed a prison fight earlier the same day and was reportedly revenge against Aaron Holt, whose son and aunt were the victims. Holt’s mother escaped with serious burns.
Five individuals, including a juvenile and four men (two in their 20s, two in their 30s), were arrested this week under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act for gang crime investigation. They can be held for up to seven days without charge. Another man in his 20s was arrested in mid-January but released without charge. These arrests mark the most significant progress in the investigation since the December 6th incident.
The house at Castleview Park, Edenderry, had a history of attacks, including a pipe bomb discovery in May 2024 and broken windows, all suspected to be by the same criminals involved in previous feud incidents. Both sides of the dispute are known to gardaí for their involvement in the midlands drug scene. Aaron Holt was later jailed for seven years over a €32,000 heroin seizure in 2024.
Separately, Christopher ‘Crunchie’ Holt, Mary Holt’s brother, died in an accidental fire at the same damaged house on March 24th. He had gained access to the boarded-up property and was living there without utilities when the fire occurred.
