Belgium Seeks Control of Nuclear Reactors from Engie Amid Energy Push

Belgium announced its intent to acquire control of its nuclear reactors from Engie, as Prime Minister Bart De Wever seeks to boost nuclear energy use. This decision, driven by rising energy prices from the Middle East War, aims to enhance energy independence and sustainability. The move reverses previous phase-out plans, with dismantling activities suspended immediately.

Belgium announced on Thursday its intention to acquire control of its nuclear reactors from the French energy giant Engie. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation's reliance on nuclear power.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated online, «An agreement has been reached with Engie to define the conditions and launch the necessary studies for a complete takeover of the Belgian nuclear fleet.» He added that «Until then, all dismantling activities are suspended with immediate effect.» De Wever has committed to increasing Belgium’s use of nuclear energy, following a decision by the previous government to reverse earlier plans for a nuclear phase-out. He emphasized, «This government is choosing safe, affordable and sustainable energy, with less dependence on fossil fuel imports and more control over our own supply.»

The renewed focus on nuclear power in Europe stems from soaring oil and gas prices, exacerbated by the Middle East War. This energy shock marks the second such crisis for Europe in a few years, following the disruption caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Engie, through its Belgian subsidiary, operates seven reactors in Belgium, located at Tihange in the eastern Liege region and at Doel, near Antwerp. Under an agreement reached in 2023 by the previous Belgian government, only two of these reactors have had their operating licenses extended beyond 2025 for a period of ten years.
