Tomas Marvanek, 39, of Grange Heights, John’s Hill, Waterford, has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murder of 43-year-old Yveta Donovalova. Donovalova, a mother of three, was found with stab wounds at a house in Waterford city earlier this week. Marvanek appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Wednesday evening, charged with the murder at Grange Heights, John’s Hill, Waterford, on April 27th.
Detective Garda Sean Lane of Waterford Garda Station provided evidence of Marvanek’s arrest, charge, and caution. He informed the court that upon being cautioned after his arrest shortly after midnight on April 29th, Marvanek stated, «I have nothing to say» to the charge.
Judge Kevin Staunton noted that bail is not available for a murder charge in the District Court, necessitating a remand in custody. Defence solicitor Ken Cunningham acknowledged this and proposed a one-week remand for his client. Marvanek, a Czech national, was accompanied by an interpreter, as English is not his first language. The judge assigned the same interpreter to assist him throughout the proceedings.
Cunningham requested that his client undergo medical and psychiatric evaluations upon arrival in prison, which the judge ordered. Marvanek was then remanded to appear by videolink at Waterford District Court on May 5th. Cunningham’s application for free legal aid was granted, and he was assigned to represent the accused, who remained silent during the four-minute hearing.
Donovalova, a native of Czechia, had resided at the Grange Heights house with her husband, three children, and the accused. She had moved to Ireland over a decade ago and worked as a cleaner in Waterford.
