Spotify Increases Premium, Family, Duo Subscription Prices in May
Spotify is raising prices for most subscription plans, including Premium, Family, and Duo, effective in May. The individual premium package will increase by 8.3% to €12.99 monthly. This move aims to allow Spotify to invest further in its Premium services, impacting millions of users.
Spotify is implementing a price increase across nearly all its subscription packages, effective in May. The individual premium package will rise from €11.99 to €12.99 per month, representing an 8.3% increase for music streamers.
In an email to customers, Spotify stated that the new pricing will enable the company to «invest more in Premium» and continuously improve the user experience. Concurrently, the family plan, which accommodates up to six users within a single household, will increase by €3, moving from €19.99 to €22.99. The duo package, designed for two individuals, will see a €2 increase, reaching €18.99. Student subscriptions previously experienced a price hike last September and are currently priced at €6.99.
Emma Howard, an economics lecturer at TU Dublin, discussed the changes on the Claire Byrne Show on Newstalk, noting that approximately 60% of Spotify users do not pay for a subscription. Free streaming options include advertisements between songs and limit skips. Howard highlighted that Spotify users average 148 minutes of daily listening time, with one in five accessing the app multiple times a day. She suggested that frequent users likely receive significant value from their subscriptions compared to past physical music purchases, but advised less frequent streamers to reconsider their subscription needs.
