Connolly to check the constitutionality of O'Callaghan's asylum law by convening the State Council
President of Ireland Catherine Connolly has ordered a legal review of the government's asylum system bill, which was hastily passed by parliament. Connolly initiated this review to check the bill's compliance with the country's constitution.
To consider the constitutionality of Minister of Justice Jim O'Callaghan's bill on international protection, Connolly convened the State Council. The council includes the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, senior judges and the Attorney General, as well as previous presidents, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Justices.
The decision to review the bill was made after a statement by the Irish equality body on the lack of "any meaningful discussion" of government legislation in parliament.
The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission stated that among the amendments that were not discussed were "basic safeguards for children, victims of trafficking and other vulnerable groups seeking international protection".
