Brussels Airport: Half of Flights Canceled on May 12 Due to National Strike

On May 12, Brussels Airport will cancel about half of its flights due to a national trade union strike against government policy. This is the ninth disruption to airport operations since early 2025. Significant disruptions to departures are expected.

Approximately half of the flights scheduled to depart from Brussels Airport on May 12 may be canceled. The reason is a nationwide demonstration in Belgium organized by trade unions. This was announced by the airport administration, citing The Brussels Times and «European Pravda».

This protest action is directed against the federal government's policies and is another in a series of similar events that have been ongoing in the country for recent months. The airport administration noted that, despite cooperation with all services to ensure the maximum possible number of flights, serious disruptions are unavoidable due to the participation of security and ground handling personnel in the strike. Airlines are advised to reduce the number of departures on this day to lessen the burden on infrastructure and prevent delays.

Meanwhile, arrivals are expected to be minimally affected. According to airport data, this marks the ninth instance since the beginning of 2025 that operations at Brussels Airport have been disrupted by union actions.

It is worth recalling that in April, strikes at the German airline Lufthansa led to widespread disruptions in the carrier's operations and the cancellation of numerous flights at German airports. Against this backdrop, Lufthansa decided to reduce the operations of its regional subsidiary, Lufthansa Cityline, and decrease the transport volumes of its main airline earlier than planned.
