Cork Contractor Faces 40% Fuel Cost Increase, Awaits €10,000 Rebate

Liam Richardson, a Cork agriculture contractor, faces a 40% increase in fuel costs, with his tractor's daily diesel expense rising from €220 to €335. He awaits a €10,000 government rebate but stresses the need for prompt payment to avoid business closures. Richardson also advocates for a fuel price cap.

Liam Richardson, an agriculture contractor in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, is experiencing significant financial strain due to rising fuel costs. Operating a business for a decade and employing four others, he notes that the daily cost to run his tractor, which uses 250 litres of diesel, has increased from €220 last year to €335 today. This represents a 40% increase in fuel costs, with diesel prices rising from 96 cent per litre a year ago to €1.34.

Richardson participated in recent fuel protests, expressing frustration that neither representative groups nor the Government were listening to their concerns. He is awaiting details of the Government’s multi-million euro response to the fuel crisis and estimates he is eligible for a rebate of over €10,000. However, he is concerned about the timing of the payment, emphasizing that quick disbursement is crucial for cash flow, warning that delays could force contractors out of business. He also advocates for a cap on fuel prices to stabilize costs.
