Marian Deasy Shares Son Lorcan's Story to Highlight Workplace Safety After 2018 Death

Marian Deasy shares her son Lorcan's 2018 workplace death story to advocate for safety, humanizing the statistics. Lorcan, 31, died after a fall due to safety breaches, leading to €32,000 in fines for three companies. Deasy now campaigns to change attitudes and prevent future tragedies.

Marian Deasy is speaking publicly about her son Lorcan's fatal workplace injury eight years ago to humanize statistics and promote safety. Lorcan, a 31-year-old electrician's assistant from Castlebar, died on January 15th, 2018, a week after falling while dismantling a raised platform alone during a refurbishment in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo. His mother stated he was using an unattached ladder without precautions.

Three companies—Ivan Kelly Electrics, CMS Distribution, and Vincent Burke Construction—were fined €32,000 for safety breaches the following year. Deasy now gives talks to managers and workers, stressing that shortcuts risk lives, not job completion. Minister Alan Dillon acknowledged her 'Live for Lorcan' campaign. Owen Reidy of Ictu and HSA chief Mark Cullen emphasized that workplace fatalities are preventable, with Cullen noting seven deaths this year, despite overall declining rates since 1989.
