Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez: Europe Must Immediately Change Energy Strategy Due to Geopolitical Chaos

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged Europe to immediately change its energy strategy due to excessive reliance on fossil fuels. He stressed that this makes countries hostages to geopolitical chaos and costs the EU billions of euros, highlighting the potential of renewable energy sources.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized that the excessive reliance of European countries on fossil fuels has made them hostages to geopolitical chaos, necessitating an accelerated energy transition. He stated this at the annual WindEurope event in Madrid, as reported by «European Pravda» citing Euractiv.

In his speech, Sánchez presented his vision for Europe, producing the world's cheapest electricity from renewable sources. The head of the Spanish government pledged to double efforts in energy transformation, stressing that abandoning dependence on fossil fuels is critically important to avoid geopolitical vulnerability.

He noted that the current oil crisis has already cost the European Union an additional 22 billion euros for energy imports, while member states ignore the significant potential of energy they can independently generate from wind and sun. Sánchez gave an example: «Italy consumed twice as much gas as Spain during the first month of the war. The difference in electricity prices between our two countries exceeded 100 euros». He added: «So let's be honest: energy transformation is not a slogan. It is a ticket to the future».

It is worth recalling that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will present the EU's strategy, developed in response to the Middle East crisis, particularly concerning energy and fertilizer prices, at the European Parliament's plenary session on April 29. She had also previously stated the EU's readiness to cooperate with Gulf countries on new projects for supplying energy to global markets.
