Cabinet to Discuss Fuel Support, Cancer Legislation, AI, and Ukraine Tribunal

Cabinet will address a €500M+ fuel support scheme for various sectors and the «Right to be Forgotten» legislation for cancer patients, reducing the mortgage application waiting period to five years. Discussions also include ethical AI, a new all-Ireland university, and Ireland’s support for accountability regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Cabinet will today discuss a fuel support scheme for haulage, construction, agriculture, quarries, and fisheries, totaling over €500 million. Up to 120,000 farmers and 1,500 agricultural contractors will receive aid, resulting in an effective €274 reduction per 1,000 litres of green diesel for March to July. €15 million is allocated for fisheries and aquaculture. Building contractors, quarries, and up to 50,000 vehicles, including buses, are also covered. An average haulage business could receive €16,230.

Tánaiste Simon Harris and Minister Robert Troy will seek approval for the «Right to be Forgotten» legislation for cancer patients, reducing the cancer-free period for mortgage applications from seven to five years. This could make 139 additional survivors eligible annually. The mortgage protection cover threshold will increase from €500,000 to €650,000. Minister Dara Calleary will present a memo on a non-means-tested Domestic Violence Travel Supplement for those fleeing abuse.

The Taoiseach will introduce a report on ethical AI development in Ireland, outlining five priority areas. Minister James Lawless will seek approval for legislation to partner Dundalk Institute of Technology and Queen's University Belfast, creating the first all-Ireland university. Minister Helen McEntee will update on supporting international accountability for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including Ireland joining the Special Tribunal on the Crime of Aggression and ratifying the International Claims Commission. She will also review the 128th Infantry Battalion before its deployment to Lebanon.
