Russia Attacked Ukraine Nuclear Substations 155 Times Since Invasion, Says Shmyhal

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported on April 26 that Russia has attacked nuclear safety substations 155 times since its invasion. He called for air defense and sanctions, and noted Ukraine needs €500 million to restore the Chornobyl New Safe Confinement damaged in a 2025 drone strike.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on April 26 that Russia has attacked substations critical to Ukraine’s nuclear safety 155 times since the full-scale invasion began. These strikes target infrastructure transmitting power from nuclear plants into the national grid, creating risks of emergency shutdowns and disrupting stable grid operation.

Speaking at an international Chornobyl conference, Shmyhal emphasized that nuclear power is central to Ukraine’s electricity supply, making these substations key targets. He called for modern air defense systems to protect energy infrastructure, especially against ballistic missiles and drones, and urged tougher sanctions on Russia’s energy sector, including Rosatom.

Separately, Shmyhal stated Ukraine needs at least €500 million to restore the Chornobyl New Safe Confinement, which was damaged in a 2025 Russian drone strike. This damage weakened safety functions, necessitating emergency repairs and long-term reconstruction efforts.
