Ukraine Secures €100 Million for Winter Energy Prep; Seeks Additional €829 Million

Ukraine's Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced €100 million secured from partners for winter energy preparations, with an additional €829 million sought. This funding is crucial for repairing infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks and ensuring stability for the upcoming heating season. Total preparation costs are estimated at €5.4 billion.

Ukraine has secured €100 million from partners through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund to prepare for the upcoming winter, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on April 26. This funding addresses ongoing repair needs and supply gaps caused by Russia's repeated missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure during previous winters.

The new commitments were made during an «Energy Ramstein» meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko. Ukraine and its partners also agreed to seek an additional €829 million for the fund to cover priority purchases and approved energy recovery needs. The total financing required for the heating season is estimated at no less than €5.4 billion.

Ukraine's priorities include protecting energy infrastructure, accelerating repair equipment procurement, expanding distributed generation, conducting large-scale repairs, and building gas reserves. Ukrainian specialists have inspected eight decommissioned thermal power plants in Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Austria, and Croatia for potential equipment transfers. Shmyhal thanked the UK, EU, Italy, Norway, Canada, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Denmark, and France for their support, and noted a separate EU decision for €90 billion in financial aid, important for energy sector stability.
