Journalist Receives Anonymous Threat Amidst Russia's Crackdown on Foreign Press
In January 2023, a journalist received an anonymous Telegram threat regarding his reporting on Russia and personal security. This occurred shortly before Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich's arrest in Russia on espionage charges. The incidents highlight the increased risks for foreign journalists in Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, leading many, including the journalist, to avoid returning.
In January 2023, a journalist in Dublin received an anonymous Telegram message threatening his personal security and criticizing his reporting on Russia. This occurred almost a year after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The journalist, who had lived and worked in Russia for 14 years, had recently published articles in UK, Irish, and US national media detailing the invasion's fallout.
A Moscow security contact advised him to take the threat seriously and avoid Russia. The journalist's Russian wife, Alsu, canceled plans to return home. In March 2023, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested in Russia on espionage charges, the first foreign journalist since the Cold War to face such accusations. This incident, combined with the personal threat, convinced the journalist not to return to Moscow.
Historically, Kremlin security typically left foreign journalists alone, focusing on domestic media. However, this distinction collapsed after the full-scale invasion in February 2022, making foreign journalists legitimate targets. The journalist had left Moscow on February 22, 2022, before the full-scale invasion, having initially believed Putin's actions were a bluff.
The invasion led to an exodus of over a million Russians, including the journalist's wife's brother, who fled to Turkey to avoid conscription. The journalist's family, including his son born in Moscow in 2018, has been deeply affected, with their Moscow apartment remaining empty. The invasion has caused widespread upheaval, fracturing families and friendships, and isolating Russia from the international community.
