EU Urges Russia to Halt Attacks on Ukraine's Nuclear Facilities Ahead of Chornobyl's 40th Anniversary

The EU, represented by Kaja Kallas and the European Commission, urged Russia to stop attacks on Ukraine's nuclear facilities before the 40th Chornobyl anniversary. Strikes on Chornobyl and the occupation of Zaporizhzhia NPP undermine safety and international efforts. The EU demands compensation and the return of control over Zaporizhzhia NPP.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and the European Commission called on Russia to immediately cease all attacks on nuclear facilities in Ukraine, ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster. A joint statement released by the European External Action Service emphasized that the Chornobyl NPP catastrophe on April 26, 1986, was one of the worst nuclear accidents in history.

The statement noted that Moscow's continuous strikes on the «New Safe Confinement» at the Chornobyl NPP undermine decades of international efforts and investments totaling 2.1 billion euros. Furthermore, Russia's illegal seizure and occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant significantly increase risks to human life and the environment, while systematic attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure threaten stable energy supply crucial for safe nuclear operations.

The EU urges Russia to adhere to the «Seven Indispensable Pillars of Nuclear Safety and Security during Armed Conflict,» compensate for damages, and return full control of the Zaporizhzhia NPP to Ukraine. Previously, on the night of February 14, 2025, a Russian drone struck the shelter of Chornobyl NPP's 4th power unit, causing significant damage.
