EU Commissioner Brunner Dissatisfied with 28% Increase in Migrant Deportations by 2025
EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner calls for stricter deportation rules, despite a 28% increase in repatriation by 2025. He believes existing rules are ineffective and urges swift adoption of a new regulation with tougher measures.
EU Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, is calling for stricter deportation rules, stating that the current increase in migrant returns is insufficient. This information comes from DW, citing «European Pravda».
In 2025, 28% of migrants who were supposed to leave the European Union were repatriated. This figure represents the highest rate in the last decade. Last year, over 491,000 individuals were subject to repatriation, with approximately 135,000 of them deported. In comparison, the repatriation rate in 2022 was 16%.
The increase in deportations is attributed, among other factors, to consistent actions by member states, greater stability in some migrant-receiving countries, and improved information systems. However, Brunner emphasized: «We cannot be satisfied with the higher number of deportations last year. The old rules for deporting irregular migrants in the EU simply do not work effectively enough».
Therefore, according to Brunner, it is crucial to swiftly adopt the new repatriation regulation, which the European Commission submitted for a vote to the European Parliament and the 27 member states last March. Brunner noted that the new regulation establishes «stricter rules for offenders, clear and binding obligations for individuals subject to a deportation order, and ensures greater efficiency in cooperation among member states». This regulation, among other provisions, allows for longer detention of individuals who do not receive protection and are required to leave, prior to their deportation. Furthermore, it permits the deportation of asylum seekers to so-called «return centers» in countries outside the EU.
It is worth noting that the EU is preparing a visit by Taliban representatives to discuss the deportation of individuals without residence rights in the bloc to Afghanistan. In Finland, the government is also tightening a number of immigration laws.
