Rathwood Garden Centre Enters Examinership Amidst Rising Customer Complaints, Halts Refunds
Carlow-based retailer Rathwood has entered examinership, continuing to trade but halting refunds. The company, which saw 565 complaints in 2025, acknowledged past issues with delays and refunds. Rathwood aims to restore customer trust after supply chain disruptions.
Rathwood, a garden centre and outdoor furniture retailer based in Carlow, has entered examinership. The company confirmed it is continuing to trade but is currently unable to process refunds.
In a statement, Rathwood reassured customers, suppliers, and partners that it continues to operate normally and in full compliance with all applicable laws. The business remains open, selling goods and engaging with customers and stakeholders as usual. However, the company stated, «At this time, we regret that we are not in a position to address any outstanding payments or refund requests relating to amounts owed up to today.» These matters will be reviewed as part of the examinership process, with further updates promised once appointed persons complete their initial report. Rathwood expressed appreciation for understanding and continued support during this period.
Rathwood was the second-most complained about company to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s (CCPC) helpline last year, surpassed only by Ryanair. Complaints against Rathwood significantly increased to 565 in 2025, a sharp rise from just 24 in 2024. The company had previously acknowledged issues with delivery delays and slow response times for issuing refunds.
Earlier this month, a Rathwood spokesperson informed RTÉ News that the company recognized it «fell short» and was «fully committed» to restoring customer trust. The company attributed some of its challenges to losing its main supplier of uniquely designed garden furniture last year, stating it has since rebuilt its supply chain to create a stronger and more reliable system for the future.
