Goggins, 55, Admits Dangerous Driving Death of Junette Stronge, 49, Jan 2

Michael Goggins, 55, apologized to the family of Junette Stronge, 49, who died on 2 January 2024 after his van veered onto the wrong side of the road in Co Kildare. Stronge was driving back from her father's 90th birthday with her two children, aged three and six months, who were uninjured. The incident occurred around 6.20pm between Kilcock and Enfield in good road conditions.

Goggins, from Oaklawns, Longwood in Co Meath, admitted dangerous driving causing death. Judge Elva Duffy noted there was no explanation for the incident and that Goggins' remorse appeared genuine. The court heard there was no evidence of speeding or mobile phone use, and the vehicles were in good condition. Goggins had written a letter accepting 100% responsibility and expressing remorse.

Judge Duffy sentenced Goggins to three years, suspending 27 months, resulting in a nine-month jail term. He was also disqualified from driving for four years. Stronge's sister, Thelma, described her as a gentle soul. Stronge's partner, Steeve, said her death left an irreplaceable void and their daughter would require therapy.

Paul Carroll SC, Goggins' lawyer, said his client struggled to explain how he ended up on the wrong side of the road. Goggins had medical issues, including sleep apnea, but the judge found no evidence they contributed to the incident. Judge Duffy commended the family's words and noted their desire for restorative justice, which she felt would not provide answers. Goggins told the judge, "I'm sorry."
