Meta to Cut 180 Irish Jobs Amid Global 10% Staff Reduction by May 20

Meta plans to cut 10% of its global workforce, potentially eliminating 180 jobs in Ireland by May 20. These reductions aim to offset AI investments and boost efficiency. This follows previous significant layoffs since 2022, impacting Meta's Irish operations.

Meta is implementing a new round of job cuts, targeting approximately 10% of its global workforce. This could result in up to 180 roles being axed in its Irish operations, which have already seen a 40% reduction since their post-Covid peak of 3,000 employees, now standing at 1,800 across sites including Dublin, Co Meath, and Cork.

In a memo, Meta announced these cuts would be effective May 20. The company is reducing staff to offset significant investments in artificial intelligence and enhance efficiency. Under Irish employment law, Meta must undergo a consultation period and inform the Government about large-scale layoffs.

This is the most substantial round of cuts since Meta began its «year of efficiency» in 2022, which led to nearly 350 job losses in Meta Ireland that year, followed by another 500 by May 2023. Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd's 2024 accounts show payroll costs of €454 million, including €257 million in wages, and €366 million in corporation tax on €2.9 billion profits.
