Aer Lingus, Ryanair Cut Summer Flights Amid Fuel Price Surge and Maintenance

Aer Lingus and Ryanair are cutting summer flights, with Aer Lingus citing maintenance and Ryanair blaming passenger caps. Jet fuel prices are at a record $195 per barrel due to geopolitical events, but hedging protects some airlines. Passengers are entitled to refunds or rerouting under EU261 for cancellations.

Aer Lingus and Ryanair have confirmed cuts to their summer schedules. Aer Lingus will cancel or reschedule about 2% of its flights, over 500 services, due to mandatory aircraft maintenance. The Irish Airline Pilots’ Association (IALPA) also cited pilot shortages, but IALPA President Mark Tighe stated Aer Lingus is not facing a «fuel cost problem» due to hedging.

Ryanair has cut 10% of its planned flights from Dublin Airport for its 2026 summer schedule, blaming the government’s «continuing failure to scrap the Dublin passenger cap,» not jet fuel prices or the Middle East conflict. Lufthansa also removed 20,000 short-haul flights until October due to higher jet fuel costs.

Jet fuel prices are at a record $195 per barrel due to the US-Iran war blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for Ireland. Professor Marina Efthymiou of DCU Business School noted that fuel is 25-30% of an airline's operating expenses, but hedging protects carriers like Aer Lingus and Ryanair from immediate supply issues. She advises booking summer flights now but waiting for September/October due to market volatility.

If a flight is cancelled, EU Regulation 261/2004 (EU261) entitles passengers to a full refund or rerouting. If cancelled 14 days or more before departure, only a refund/rerouting is due. If cancelled less than 14 days prior, additional compensation may apply unless due to extraordinary circumstances. Airlines must inform passengers of options, and cash refunds are mandatory unless vouchers are chosen.
