Stream BioEnergy to Invest €80 Million in Ireland's Largest Biomethane Facility in Cork

Stream BioEnergy will invest €80 million in Ireland's largest biomethane facility in Co Cork, processing 90,000 tonnes of waste annually to produce 80 GWh of biomethane. Cofounder Kevin Fitzduff urges government protection against subsidised imports to achieve national decarbonisation and energy security targets. The project is crucial for Ireland's renewable gas sector growth.

Stream BioEnergy plans to invest €80 million in Ireland's largest biomethane facility in Co Cork. The facility, located at Little Island, east of Cork city, will process 90,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial food and garden waste annually. This is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and deliver 80 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable biomethane per year.

Kevin Fitzduff, cofounder of Stream BioEnergy, stated the project will significantly contribute to Ireland’s decarbonisation efforts and energy security. It will also support the Government’s National Biomethane Strategy target of producing 5.7 Terawatt hours (TWh) of indigenous biomethane by 2030. The plant will also produce sustainable biofertilisers from recycled food waste.

Fitzduff emphasized the need for the Irish Government to agree a deal with the European Commission on its Renewable Heat Obligation scheme. This is crucial to protect Irish biomethane producers from subsidised imports and ensure only unsubsidised biomethane is eligible for import. This support is vital for the domestic sector to scale and achieve national targets.

Centrica’s Bord Gáis Energy has secured the gas off-take contract for the facility, and major waste collection companies will supply waste. Gas Networks Ireland will connect the Cork plant to the national gas network. This facility marks a key milestone for Stream BioEnergy, strengthening its position as a leading developer and operator of renewable gas infrastructure across Ireland and Britain.
