Ukrainian and Latvian Arrested in Bavaria on Sabotage Espionage Charges

Bavarian authorities arrested a 43-year-old Ukrainian and a 45-year-old Latvian on April 12, suspected of espionage and sabotage for a foreign entity. The men were detained during a traffic stop on the A6 highway, where forged documents, a drone, and surveillance equipment were found. Both are in pretrial custody, facing additional charges for false identification documents.

Bavarian authorities have arrested two men suspected of conducting intelligence work on behalf of an entity located outside Germany. The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office and the Munich General Prosecutor's Office announced the arrests in a joint statement reported by AFP.

The suspects, a 43-year-old Ukrainian and a 45-year-old Latvian, were detained on April 12. Their arrest followed a routine traffic check on the A6 highway near Neuendettelsau, during which they attracted the attention of officers. The two agencies allege that the men are accused of «agent activity for sabotage purposes,» among other charges.

Prosecutors claim the pair operated at the direction of an unnamed foreign association or institution. Neither the sponsoring entity nor the specifics of the suspected sabotage plans have been publicly disclosed. During the traffic stop, officers discovered «various suspicious objects,» including forged identity documents, cameras, a drone, GPS trackers, radio equipment, multiple mobile phones, and SIM cards.

The Munich General Prosecutor's Office secured arrest warrants for both suspects, who investigators state have no fixed residence in Germany. Both individuals have been remanded in pretrial custody. In addition to the espionage allegations, they face charges of obtaining false official identification documents. Authorities have indicated that no further details will be released due to the ongoing investigation.
