Taoiseach Martin: EU Leaders Pessimistic on Iran War Impact, Ireland in Better Position

Taoiseach Micheál Martin noted European leaders' pessimism about the Iran war's medium-term impact on supply and prices. He stated the energy crisis is worse than past economic crises, but Ireland is in a «better position» and expects continued growth.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin reported widespread pessimism among European leaders at a Cyprus dinner regarding the medium-term impact of the war in Iran on supply and prices. He noted that the International Energy Agency stated the current energy crisis is worse for the global economy than the combined impact of the 1973, 1979, and 2022 economic crises.

Despite this, Martin affirmed Ireland is in a «better position than others». Scenario planning by Department of Finance economists indicates Ireland will «still grow», even in a worst-case scenario. While not immune to global economic downgrades due to its export-driven economy, Ireland's financial situation provides a stronger footing for future budget planning.
