Giorgia Meloni: EU Energy Crisis Measures Insufficient Amid Middle East War
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that current EU energy measures are insufficient amid the Middle East war. She emphasized the need for additional steps, as not all EU countries have equal fiscal capacity.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that the European Union needs to take more measures in the energy sector, especially in light of the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Meloni made this statement upon her arrival at an informal EU summit in Cyprus, as reported by ANSA. She highly praised the European Commission's efforts in energy planning, calling them «a step forward,» but emphasized that these measures are «not enough.»
Meloni also noted that part of the proposal involves greater flexibility in providing state aid. However, according to her, not all EU countries have the same fiscal space to implement such measures. Italy, as previously reported, has suffered the greatest economic damage among EU countries due to disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, Giorgia Meloni had already stated that if the US and Israel's war against Iran continues, the EU should consider a temporary suspension of budget deficit rules.
