English Language School Body «Deeply Concerned» by Unpaid Student Funds

English Education Ireland (EEI) is deeply concerned about international students owed money by some Irish language schools, stressing this doesn't reflect its members' high standards. EEI questioned why existing sanctions aren't applied and urged clarity on enforcement under the new TrustEd Ireland framework, which also worries the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) regarding student vulnerability.

English Education Ireland (EEI), representing 62 English language schools, expressed deep concern regarding international students owed money by some Irish businesses. EEI stated these revelations are not representative of its members' high standards, where the vast majority operate correctly, hold fees properly, and process refunds promptly. The issue follows RTÉ News reports of dozens of prospective students from developing countries paying significant sums to private colleges like NED College in Limerick and English Talks in Cork, neither of which are EEI members.

EEI highlighted that rules for escrow arrangements are clear and recently strengthened, questioning why sanctions, such as removal from the ILEP for non-compliance, are not applied. The body welcomed the sector's regulation and anticipates the full implementation of TrustEd Ireland, a new quality assurance framework. However, EEI raised concerns about how compliance will be monitored and enforced once TrustEd, which shifts monitoring from the Department of Justice, is fully established, urging the Government to clarify enforcement.

Separately, the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) also voiced concerns that TrustEd might leave students more vulnerable due to a perceived lack of robust independent oversight. EEI also pointed out that lengthy visa processing times trap significant student funds in escrow for months, negatively impacting Ireland's reputation as a fair and transparent destination.
