Ireland Tests Digital Wallet for Government Documents from April 3, 2026

On April 3, 2026, the Irish government launched consultation and testing of a digital wallet for government documents. Digital versions of a driver's license, birth certificate, European Health Insurance Card, and other official records can be stored on a phone. The main idea is less paperwork, less data duplication, and easier access to government services. Wallet should help with identification, access to services, benefits, and interaction with the state online and offline.

The EU is moving towards a common digital identification model, and the European Commission and the Council of the EU have laid the framework for the EU Digital Identity Wallet, which member states must implement by the end of 2026. They promise an emphasis on privacy and user control: the person decides what data to show. In Ireland, Wallet is seen as an age verification tool – secure age verification for online services.

In 2024, the government emphasized that this is an opt-in service that should not immediately replace physical documents, but is an additional digital tool. For people, this may mean less bureaucracy, faster access to services, and fewer visits to departments.
