Innovations in Irish medicine: now some problems can be solved directly at the pharmacy

In Ireland, the Health Service Executive (HSE) program is in effect, which allows you to get help for some common diseases directly at the pharmacy, without having to make an appointment with a general practitioner (GP).

Pharmacists who have undergone special training can conduct a consultation, assess the patient's condition and offer treatment. In some cases, they can also write a prescription for certain medications, but only within the approved medical protocols.

You can contact the pharmacy for mild conditions such as conjunctivitis, impetigo (skin infections), allergic rhinitis and herpes on the lips. The list of diseases is limited and regulated by the HSE.

For Medical Card holders, this consultation is free of charge. For others, the cost is usually around 20–35 euros, depending on the pharmacy.

It is important to note that this service does not replace a doctor's appointment. Not all diseases can be diagnosed and cured at the pharmacy, and the prescription of some drugs, including antibiotics, is strictly limited. In more complex cases, the pharmacist will refer the patient to a GP.

The program is gradually being implemented throughout the country, but not all pharmacies participate, so it is recommended to check the availability of the service in advance.

This innovation allows you to get help faster for uncomplicated diseases and reduce the waiting time for a doctor's appointment.
