Aviva Life and Pensions Ireland paid €125.6 million in protection claims to over 2,900 customers in 2025 across income protection, life insurance, and specified illness policies. New income protection claims increased by 32% compared to 2024, reflecting both more people unable to work and Aviva's expanded customer base. Approximately 2,300 customers received €54.6 million in income protection payments, with 92% of claims paid.
The average income protection claim lasted 7.8 years, up from 7.5 years in 2024, with 55% of claims lasting over five years. The longest active claim has been in payment for 34 years. Psychological illness was the most common cause for income protection claims, accounting for 26% of claims, a 4% decrease from 2024. Orthopaedic conditions followed at 25%, and cancer at 21%. Men claimed more for orthopaedic conditions (30%), while women claimed more for cancer (23%).
Aviva paid €59.4 million in life insurance and terminal illness claims to 463 customers, with 97% of claims paid. Cancer was the leading cause. Specified illness claims totaled €11.6 million for 151 customers, with an 87% acceptance rate, up from 82% in 2025. Cancer accounted for 67% of these claims.
