Independent Radio Stations Urge Minister O’Donovan to Halt «Unsustainable» 39% Levy Hike

Independent radio stations are urging Media Minister Patrick O’Donovan to stop an «unsustainable» 39% average increase in the broadcast levy for 2026. The Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) warns this hike, following previous increases, will be unaffordable for many stations, impacting their financial viability amidst tight advertising markets.

Independent radio stations, represented by the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI), have called on Media Minister Patrick O’Donovan to intervene regarding a proposed 39% average increase in the broadcast levy for 2026. This follows previous increases last year and would mean tens of thousands of euro more for many stations, some of which deem it unaffordable.

The IBI stated that the 2026 levy for radio would be 2.8% of turnover, significantly higher than TV (1.21%), Online Services (1.25%), or Hosting Services (0.54%). They argue this hike is unsustainable, especially given the radio advertising market grew by only 0.9% last year and stations face competition from global platforms. Labour TD Alan Kelly, chair of the Oireachtas media committee, also urged Minister O’Donovan to protect independent radio stations, calling the 39% increase «a step too far.»
