Tánaiste Simon Harris Calls Pinergy 82% Electricity Night Rate Hike «Extraordinary»

Tánaiste Simon Harris condemned Pinergy’s «extraordinary» 82% increase in its electricity night rate, demanding regulatory clarity. The government is seeking structural ways to reduce high energy costs for households and businesses, with the issue being a focus for the upcoming budget.

Tánaiste Simon Harris has labeled Pinergy’s 82% increase in its electricity night rate as «extraordinary.» This hike, part of a general price change, will significantly impact those charging electric vehicles or solar panels overnight.

Harris, speaking in Cork on Friday, demanded clarity from regulators regarding the rationale behind the price increase. He emphasized the government’s commitment to greater transparency in the energy market, drawing parallels to reforms in the motor insurance industry where premium compositions are disclosed.

The government is actively exploring structural methods to reduce energy costs for families and businesses, including the transition to green energy. Harris confirmed that the National Energy Affordability Task Force will soon conclude its work, and he recently met with Energy Minister Daragh O’Brien on the issue. Officials in his department are also examining economic levers to lower Ireland’s high energy bills.

Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore criticized the price hikes, noting that Electric Ireland and Yuno Energy are also increasing annual charges by €250-€300. Harris stated that structurally reducing energy costs will be a key focus for the upcoming budget, now 96 days away.
